Not so sure about the "waking the old man" bit. In reality you've found yourself in a situation where you need advice/guidance/orders/action.

You call the master .... he's in a deep sleep ... he enters the wheelhouse ... he makes an immediate decision  ... based on what? ... 

As a watch-keeping officer don't run yourself into that situation. Think ahead. It's your watch, it's your ship, it's your responsibility.
